NATION-WIDE PATCH CLAMP WORKSHOP

at
Dr. Panjwani Center for Molecular Medicine and Drug Research

First Nation-Wide Patch Clamp workshop was held at the Dr Panjwani Center for Molecular Medicine and Drug Research (PCMD) under the Patronage of the Director ICCBS, Prof. Dr. M. Iqbal Choudhary.

Objectives of this workshop were:
To provide an opportunity to the scientists to learn the state of art technique of Patch clamping  for the first time in Pakistan.
To exhibit the phenomenon of drug-cell interaction at the molecular level.
To provide a forum of interaction of the scientists from all over Pakistan
To learn from the experience of the experts in this field.

Expected benefit from this workshop is that after learning and applying this technique carefully, scientist around Pakistan will be capable of presenting their chemicals and isolated compounds for clinical trials and ultimately for the FDA approval.  This technique is used by all giant drug companies such as Pfizer and Glaxo Smith and Kline.

Director ICCBS, appreciate the importance of converting basic research into translational research, so as to bring our discoveries from the bench top to the bed side.
Complete Patch Clamp setup consists of HEKA EPC 10 dual amplifier and Nikon inverted microscope with camera is present in lab P026 at PCMD, ICCBS University of Karachi, along with state of art perfusion system and micromanipulators. All components are run by their respective softwares. All of the above mentioned components are placed on an antivibrating table under a Faraday cage. Horizontal pipette puller from Sutter and Microforge system for electrode fire polishing and Sylgarding are also present in the lab at PCMD, University of Karachi.

Prof Dr Fatima Shad Kaneez and Dr Shabana Simjee were the organizers of this workshop, which was well received by the nation wide faculty and students.

This workshop was facilitated and taught by the Patch Clamp Expert Professor Dr Andrew J Moorhouse from Australia and both organizers from PCMD.

During the workshop from 6th to 12th of November 45 nation wide selected faculty and students received extensive training from 9 am to 5.00 pm on the patch clamp set up housed at PCMD, along with daily lectures by Prof Moorhouse
