Dr. Ali has worked as a senior scientist at the National Cancer Institute and subsequently, maintained an independent research program first at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke and then at the Division of Cancer Prevention, National Cancer Institute.  Her scientific work has been published in highly refereed journals.  For the last several years, she and her co workers have conducted investigation using integrated genomic and proteomic approaches into the molecular mechanisms that underlie tumor initiation and progression in an effort to develop targeted molecular approaches to cancer prevention and intervention.  Her ongoing work, using human clinical specimens and cultured cell lines, would help to develop a highly interactive molecular oncology program at the interface of basic, clinical, and translational research.  The program is expected to make valuable contributions towards the goal of making individualized treatment a reality.

His research group specialize in molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, molecular docking, solvation energy, free energy of binding, QSAR, pharmacophore studies, in silico screening methods and ab initio calculations.

This includes stem cell isolation, propagation, identification and transplantation into theinfarcted heart and determination of their fate by functional analysis. The in vitro analysis includes studies related to fusion of different cell types in culture and analysis of the fused cells by identification of surface markers they express. Other research interests include protein structure studies and protein structure prediction.

The research project involves the over expression of tumor suppressor genes or anti-oncogenes that slow down cell division and repair DNA mistakes. The study deals with the design of transgenic expression vector, molecular cloning of the gene etc. The alteration in the expression of other regulated genes will also be investigated after the over expression of the gene of interest. Further studies will be done to investigate the novel synthetic and herbal compounds responsible for inhibiting the cell proliferation by inhibiting the proteins responsible for promoting cell division, by blocking epidermal growth factors or by inhibiting the other oncogenes. Other research areas include studies related to pain, inflammation and signaling/ cellular mechanism of thrombosis and hemostasis. She also has an experience to evaluate novel compounds for pharmacological and biochemical and toxicological activities.

She is working on the isolation of bone marrow stem cells and classification of different bone marrow cell types on the basis of their surface antigens.  Her research work also involves in vivo transplantation of stem cells to the infarcted myocardium of rats, measuring heart function after transplantation, analysis of formation of new blood vessels and other related techniques. She is also involved in the in vitro analysis of the co-culture of neonatal cardiomyocytes with bone marrow stem cells to investigate the relationship between in vivo transdifferentiation of bone marrow stem cells into new cardiomyocytes.

Current research studies involve analyses of complex cardiovascular diseases using rat as a model system. Main focus is directed towards the identification of underlying predisposing genes, subsequent identification of their molecular variants and establishing multiple congenic rat strains and molecular analysis. Research work also includes a combinatorial approach of positional cloning and expression profiling which serve as a powerful tool to identify positional candidate genes within chromosomal regions for genetically determined cardiovascular diseases.

Current research includes investigation of transcriptional and translational regulation of the expression of mitochondrial genes using microarrays. Genetic modification of genes encoding mitochondrial proteins include the cloning and subsequent over expression or silencing of genes of interest. Future investigations include measuring of ribosomal activity by polysome analysis and the effect of transgenic approaches on the mitochondrial energy production mechanism.

Current research interests include studies of pulmonary angiogenesis by protein and lipid angiogenic factors and the role of omega-3 fatty acids (a constituent of fish oil) and polyphenols (found in grape skins and red wine) on cellular processes in cancer and the cardiovascular system.
Research in cancer area includes investigation of the effects of omega-3 fatty acids and polyphenols on cancer growth inhibition in various in vivo and in vitro cancer models. Recent research is focused on identification of nutritional compounds for inhibition of muscle wasting (cachexia), an atrophic condition often associated with cancer, inflammation, AIDS and other chronic diseases.

Louise Johnson read Physics at University College London and completed her PhD in Molecular Biophysics at the Royal Institution London (1965) under the supervision of Sir Lawrence Bragg and David Phillips where she worked on the structure of lysozyme, the first enzyme structure to be solved by X-ray diffraction. She joined the Laboratory of Molecular Biophysics at the University of Oxford in 1967. Her recent research has been with protein kinases and the regulatory molecules of the cell cycle and has included a structure based drug design programme. She was appointed to the David Phillips Chair of Molecular Biophysics in Oxford in 1990 and was elected Fellow of the Royal Society also in 1990. In 2003 she was appointed Director of Life Sciences at the Diamond Light Source, the UK's new synchrotron source and shares this position 50% with her appointment at Oxford. In 2003 she was awarded the title of DBE in the New Years Honors list.

Prof. Saadiya Aziz Karim is the Dean, Faculty of Medicine, University of Karachi. She is also the Chairperson, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, at Karachi Medical & Dental College and Abbasi Shaheed Hospital and former Principal, Karachi Medical & Dental College.  She has played a pivotal role in the development of Undergraduate and Postgraduate training programmes and Research at the Aga Khan University, University of Karachi and the College of Physicians & Surgeons, Pakistan. She has been awarded Honorary Fellowship of the College of Physicians & Surgeons, Pakistan in consideration of long standing national service to the medical profession. Author of 24 publications, including original research and chapters in international books, her current research focuses on relationship of nutritional parameters with pregnancy outcome and development of national screening programs for gynaecological cancer.
