A TRIBUTE TO PROF. DR. WOLFGANG VOELTER

Prof. Wolfgang Voelter has left an indelible mark on science in Pakistan and in many developing countries. MMDR-8 is dedicated to the memory of Prof. Wolfgang Voelter, to pay tribute to his immense services to Pakistan and to the ICCBS.
Prof. Voelter acquired allocation of 2.3 million DM, followed by 3.5 million DM from German Government and GTZ in 1978. This allowed HEJ Research Institute of Chemistry to acquire sophisticated apparatus. He has trained and supported a large number of young Pakistanis as a true mentor, including 20 full PhDs. Over 90 German students from his laboratory have also visited the center to carry out part of their work. After the establishment of the PCMD, Prof. Voelter helped in the establishment of virology and molecular biology sections. Over 150 research publications in best peer reviewed journals have been published in collaboration with the laboratory of Prof. Wolfgang Voelter. Prof. Voelter has received several international awards, including prestigious civil awards, Hilal-e-Pakistan, and Sitara-e-Pakistan, from the Government of Pakistan. He had an unparalleled love, affection, and respect for the people of Pakistan and confidence on their talent and abilities. He was truly the ambassador of Pak-German Scientific cooperation and friendship. Without his immense support, the institution could not have achieved excellence in research in its early stages of development.
